These are Georgia Geologic Survey lithologies, that John (Hetrick) and I (Paul Huddlestun) logged around 1976. The cores were taken in the late 60’s for Bill Marsalis who, I understand, was planning to write up a bulletin on Washington County geology. He bowed out of it before I arrived and was at that time working on mapping a county in the Chattahoochee River area. I later thought it odd that he quit Washington County after taking all those cores but, by the time John Hetrick and I had logged those cores, I pretty well had worked out the broad stratigraphy of the region. After that, I just figured Washington County was just over Bill’s head because by the late 70’s, the Barnwell stratigraphy was obvious to me. However, after editing these cores again and comparing them, I changed my mind. Had I come bouncing into Georgia without any idea of the stratigraphy of the Coastal Plain, and if I had been given a year to work out the Washington County stratigraphy and geology, based on the cores that I took and the outcrops, I too would have quickly come to a dead end.
Anyway, The Barnwell Group comes slamming together in the Washington County area in what appears as a God-awful mess. Now I can easily understand why Marsalis bailed out of there when he did. I don’t see how one could have straightened out anything with the Barnwell Group if they only started working on the Barnwell in Washington County. I was lucky in that I’d been working on the Barnwell both in the Savannah River area and in central Georgia to the west of Washington County. As a result I was able to put the bits and pieces together after I had started working with John Hetrick; after he had already identified the key outcrops and mapped the area (only Barnwell formation/group). I still remember when I first realized in a flash how all the subdivision fitted together; that was as late as 1978, just after Sam had left the Survey. Curiously, when working in the Savannah River area, I went over to Barnwell in South Carolina to check out Cooke’s suggested railroad cut, type locality for the unit. I turns out to be updip Altamaha Formation similar to that in Burke County. The Altamaha is still not recognized in South Carolina but I don’t blame the SCGS for that. The type Altamaha is far downdip, thick Altamaha, whereas the South Carolina Altamaha is far updip, thin, and deeply weathered. like in Burke County (also quite a ways south of the Savannah River for a lithostratigraphically useless visit). Actually relatively unweathered Altamaha can be found southeast of Burke County in Screven County.
